Birds that belong to the crow family, including magpies, azure-winged magpies, and nightingales are the smartest of all bird species. In fact, magpies and crows can even perceive the concept of volume and the flow of time, and can recognize themselves through reflected images of themselves in a mirror; it is also known that they spend leisure time, enjoy their own culture, and have a language of their own. Particularly, New Caledonian crows are able to grab food out from bottles by using wires after bending them. Even chimpanzees that are known to be the smartest of all wild animals are unable to make a hook as they do.
Max Planck Institute for the Science of Human History in Germany analyzed the correlation between the duration of parenting babies and their cognitive abilities, using data from thousands of bird species, including 127 species of the crow family. As a result, it was found that the parental care had a great influence on the high intelligence of birds of the crow family. When the birds of the crow family are born, they stay in the nest for about 29 days on average, which is 16 days longer than that of other birds. Their period of learning from their parents even after they leave the nest was about four years maximum; this is ten times longer than that of other birds.
