Until I Give Thanks in All Circumstances

  • When I was young, my mom stayed home with us all day. As I went into high school, my family life changed. Since she had to take care of three children by herself, we had to live with other relatives for a few years. But even in the rough situation, she promised us we would have our own house some day.

But she did not have a job to make enough money. She worked two jobs, and even attended a nursing school, so she was not able to sleep for some days and to eat to feed us. When I look at pictures from that time, she looked skinny and sick. My mom sacrificed everything for us. She gave me money, so I could meet my friends and play sports, but now I know she could use that to take care of herself. Her only concern was for her loving children.

Nevertheless, as the oldest child, I was the most rebellious. I was bitter about our situation and I was always grumbling and complaining, making it harder for her. But she never said anything but just worked harder to give me what I wanted. She always taught us, “God will help us and make us happy, so be thankful always for what we have.”

Through this, I came to think of how much Heavenly Mother loves us.

“Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” (1 Th 5:16–18)

I’ve read this verse many times, but only had a shallow understanding. When I thought of my physical mom’s sacrifice, now I understand why Mother wishes this for us. Every day, Heavenly Mother gave examples to follow this. She is constantly praying, never complains, and always shares with us Her joy and the beauty of the Kingdom of Heaven. She promised us we would go back home soon!

How many times Mother stayed up all night, praying for me to understand Her love and stop grumbling? How many days Mother gave good things out for Her children? Mother’s love is so deep. From now on, I want to understand Her love more deeply.
