Looking Ahead

  • While preparing for my driver’s license, I practiced road driving. Trying to keep perfectly in my lane, I kept my eyes on the front of the car. Yet somehow, the car kept swaying, and I felt myself drifting. That is when my instructor told me:

“If you focus too closely, you’ll crash. Keep your eyes on the road ahead. Only by looking farther can you drive well—and pass the test.”

At that moment, his words felt like more than just driving advice. They struck a chord deep inside me.

I thought, “Have I only been seeing what is right in front of me?”

I recalled how I had kept my eyes fixed on the life of today—the immediate circumstances, unresolved problems, and the daily struggle to make a living—so that anxiety steadily took hold, and my hope for heaven grew dim. Fixating only on what is right before our eyes causes both life and faith to drift and falter. While practicing driving, I was reminded of the importance of lifting my eyes—not merely to the road ahead but to the eternal kingdom that awaits us.

I will lift my gaze beyond the weight of daily struggles and fix it firmly on the eternal kingdom of heaven that God has promised, pressing forward with steadfast resolve along the road of faith.
