  • Sometimes I open a New Song book and slowly read through the lyrics. Other times, I listen to the songs and write down the words by hand. While doing so, I often come to new realizations and feel overwhelmed with emotion, being released from the burden of worry and anxiety that once weighed heavily on my mind. I gain courage and comfort as well as renewed strength to overcome the trials placed before me and the frustrations that seem unresolved.

Back in my school days, when my faith was still fragile, New Songs were simply melodies I sang at church because my mother took me there. One day, some members from Zion invited me to join them for the New Song Festival. Since I had always enjoyed singing, I accepted it without much thought. At first, I focused only on singing the right notes, but as I continued to practice singing, I became curious to know what a New Song is and why we should sing it. Gradually, I began to see and hear the love and sacrifice of God reflected in the lyrics of the New Song.

“Ah, New Song is a song of praise to God, which reflects the heart of God who longs to give life to our souls.” This realization came over me.

From then on, I began to think about how I could express my gratitude to God and glorify Him. That’s when I decided to write lyrics for a New Song.

I began by meditating on the verse, “Give thanks in all circumstances.” I thought about what I should thank God for. As I looked back at myself, I came to realize that everything I had been enjoying in God was not something to take for granted. Every moment of each day—the moment I prayed to God in Zion, the time spent with my brothers and sisters, the moment of participation in a gathering and a volunteer activity—was God’s grace and blessing. I was so happy and grateful that I received such a great blessing and grace.

“Indeed, how blessed we all are! Nothing brings us more joy! Indeed, how blessed we all are. Oh, how happy we are!” (from a New Song titled “Indeed, How Blessed We All Are!)

The lyrics of each New Song, filled with gratitude to God and the joy of salvation, serve as a guidepost in my heart, which helps me remain unwavering in my walk of faith. When I was a student, every New Song spoke to me in the way that suited me as a student, and when I am a young adult now, it means to me in the way that fits me according to my current circumstances.

Here in Zion, where our Heavenly Father and Mother dwell, we lift our hands in prayer to God, who continually pours out the water of life upon us. God gives answers to our unsolved problems and fulfills our earnest wishes. Truly, we are a blessed people.
