  • In the United States, university commencement ceremonies usually take place between May and June. One of the main highlights of these ceremonies is the congratulatory speech delivered by seniors in life. During the 2016 commencement ceremony at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education, then-dean James Ryan gave a speech on five life-changing questions. One of the five questions he brought up was “How can I help?” Ryan asserted that this question is the key to forming meaningful relationships. This is because the question respects the other person’s perspective rather than offering a one-sided solution. It also encourages the person to reflect on the issue through conversation and arrive at a clearer answer on their own.

Just as the saying goes, “Still waters run deep,” it’s hard to truly understand someone based on what’s visible on the surface. If you sincerely want to help others, start by considering their circumstances and viewpoint. Show genuine interest by asking what they really need. In doing so, you can offer words and actions that are entirely beneficial to them.

Remember, lasting connections with those you care about begin with consideration rooted in empathy and respect.
