A Passage Engraved in My Soul

Putting Off the Old Self and Being Made New

  • A sister brought a banana tree to plant at the church garden. But it didn’t seem to be able to survive as it had short roots and showed signs of withering.

We planted the tree in the garden after letting it stay in water for a few days. Though we watered the tree for a few weeks, it continued to wither. So we decided to pull out the tree and first removed its top part that appeared dead. Surprisingly, new green leaves were sprouting underneath it. After getting rid of the dead parts, we let the tree grow in the garden, and now it is growing beautifully.

“You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.” (Eph 4:22–24)

I feel that God wants us to learn to get rid of our old selves so that the Holy Spirit can dwell in us and we can grow to be beautiful children of God.
