During a worship service, a particular Bible verse caught my attention.
Repentance is not simply a feeling of regret for what we have done wrong. It means acknowledging our sins, turning away from them, and resolving never to walk the same path again. No matter how many tears we shed in regret, if our actions do not change, it cannot be true repentance. True repentance means changing the direction of our thoughts and actions and turning our lives toward God. Only when we fully repent can we receive forgiveness for the sins we committed in heaven.
The word “repentance” appears frequently in the Bible. Perhaps this is because without repentance, our relationship with God cannot be fully restored, nor can we escape judgment. For those who truly repent and change, the barrier of sin is removed, opening the way to grace. Seen in this light, repentance is not merely a means of escaping judgment, but a gift of God’s grace that enables us to begin a new life.
I give thanks to God for giving me the opportunity to turn away from sin and move toward salvation. I will never forget the value of this blessing, but will live a life of repentance rather than one of mere regret.
