How My Mother Redefines Me

  • There was a time in my life when I felt drained and weighed down by negative thoughts. I believed I was nothing but a source of worry to my parents—like a painful finger that caused trouble rather than help.

Even parents can feel heartbroken when they see their child in such a state, and at times, unintended sharp words may slip out. But my mother was different. After my parents came to treat me to a meal, I sent them a message of thanks, adding, “I’m sorry for being a child who worries so much and for exhausting you.” When her reply arrived, I couldn’t hold back my tears.

“You are not a child full of worries. You’re just a thoughtful child.”

Her words of comfort—telling me that being careful in everything is a good thing and that everything would be all right—deeply moved me. Yet what truly broke my heart open was the way she gently redefined me. She didn’t call me a “worrisome child,” but a “thoughtful one.” Whenever I struggle to love myself, my mother reminds me of my worth once again. Each time she does, I find the strength to rise again and move forward with hope.

Spiritually, I often feel the same way. When guilt weighs heavily on my heart and I feel like a daughter who brings sorrow rather than comfort to Heavenly Mother, She gently reminds me of my true value. Calling me “My everything in life and My only concern,” She embraces me with immeasurable love.

Just as earthly parents strengthen and encourage their children, our Heavenly Parents renew my spiritual strength each day. The promise that we were chosen before creation, and the assurance that God has engraved our names on His hands, become my hope for heaven and the power that carries me forward. Holding these words close to my heart, I pray to remain steadfast—to endure the trials of this world without faltering and to cling to the hope of heaven until the very end.
