  • These days, it is not as common to see young children as it once was, which makes the little ones I meet at Zion feel all the more precious and delightful. In our church, there are a few adorable little angels, including a three-year-old who, unusually advanced for her age, speaks so fluently that even adults can easily carry on a conversation with her.

Since I have such a fondness for children, I try to approach her whenever I go to Zion—but more often than not, I end up disappointed. Perhaps she is still a bit shy; even when I smile and reach out, she pulls away and does not easily let me hold her.

One Sabbath, after the worship, I was sitting with the members when the little girl caught my eye and walked over to me. To my surprise, she took my hand and brought it to her face. Overjoyed, I said, “Thank you for coming to me!” but did not quite know what to do. Then she kept holding my hand, exclaiming, “Spit it out! Spit it out!”

It turned out she had a mint in her mouth that was too strong and wanted to spit it out. Having no experience with children, I did not think to take it from her barehanded. I got up to grab a tissue, and by the time I returned, she had already run off to her aunt.

Later, her aunt explained that at home, whenever the child could not finish her food, her mother or aunt would simply hold out their hand to take it from her. Suddenly, her actions made perfect sense. I felt sorry for not helping her right away when she had trusted me enough to come to me. When I later apologized, she looked up and gave me a bright smile, as if she understood.

In that moment, I was filled with gratitude, realizing once again that Heavenly Mother is always by my side—understanding my heart and helping me in every situation. All of Her thoughts and care are devoted to Her children. The fact that She came down to this earth from heaven is living proof of Her willingness to put us before Herself. I reflected on how often I take this love for granted.

I am deeply grateful to be a child of Heavenly Father and Mother, who are always with me, guiding and helping me every step of the way. I resolve to follow Their example, striving to understand others and lend a helping hand with a sincere and willing heart.
