Giving Thanks Even in Hardship

  • Last Summer, the Gangneung region experienced a severe drought. The local authorities distributed bottled water—either supplied by the city or donated from across the country—to residents facing water shortages. When I went to receive some, I heard a neighbor smiling brightly as they expressed their gratitude:

"The water only runs for a short time each day, but I’m grateful to receive bottled water thanks to the care and support of so many people. I used to buy it myself, but now it’s practically free. I’m not the only one going through this—everyone is—so if we endure a little longer, it doesn’t feel as difficult.”

Their cheerful attitude was contagious, and I found myself smiling along.

Yet, not everyone shared that perspective. Some recipients grumbled:

"It’s nice that we’re getting bottled water, but it’s a bit of a hassle that it doesn’t get delivered to our homes."

Watching some respond with gratitude and others with complaints made me reflect on my own heart. In Zion, everyone carries their own crosses, enduring trials as they walk the path of faith. I asked myself: How have I been walking the gospel path?

Father and Mother filled every ordinance of the New Covenant with blessings to save Their sinful children. As I reflected, I wondered whether I had truly been thankful—or whether I had been more focused on my own inconveniences. From now on, I want to live as a child who responds to Their love and sacrifice with gratitude at every step.
