My son is in second grade. When he first started elementary school, he joined the after-school soccer club. I thought he’d enjoy it since he loves soccer, but he often came home frustrated when he made mistakes. He wanted to play forward, but the ball kept getting taken from him, so he ended up in defense. Even as a defender, he would often commit fouls and receive criticism from his friends.
Listening to his struggles, I thought it might be best for him to quit the soccer club. But every semester, he insisted on signing up again. Though he knows he isn’t naturally gifted at soccer, he told me he enjoys it too much to stop. If it had been me, I would have given up long ago, so I felt proud of my son’s determination.
To my surprise, my son was chosen as the captain of the first- and second-grade soccer team. Although he isn’t the most skilled player, his teacher must have seen his passion and dedication.
I imagine that our Heavenly Mother also delights in seeing Her children give their best, even in their imperfections. Thinking of this fills me with gratitude for being called to take part in the gospel work. Believing that sincere effort and steadfast perseverance will lead to good fruit, I will continue walking faithfully each day in the gospel.
