The way we breathe is as unique as the fingerprints on our hands. The brief pause before inhaling, the amount of air drawn in, and the pace of each exhale—these elements vary distinctly from one person to another. Researchers at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel observed and analyzed participants’ breathing over a 24-hour period. Their findings revealed that individuals could be identified with 96.8 percent accuracy based solely on their breathing patterns. The study suggests that, in the future, such patterns may serve as an important new indicator for assessing both physical and mental health.
Prayer, the breath of the soul, also carries its own unique rhythm. For some, prayer is an unending stream of gratitude; for others, it is a constant offering of repentance, never forgetting past shortcomings. Some lift up prayers of love for their brothers and sisters, placing the needs of others before their own. What, then, is the nature of our own prayer? If we have been taking only shallow breaths without realizing it—inhaling worry and doubt while exhaling discontent and greed—then let us pause and quietly reflect on the state of our faith and steady our breath once more. May God remember each of our prayers as a beautiful breath, filled with gratitude, love, passion, hope, and joy.
